Q.
Are you a nursing home?
A.
No. Hallmark House is actually an assisted living facility that specializes in Alzheimer’s and memory care.
Q.
What’s the difference between a nursing home and an assisted living facility?
A.
Nursing homes typically house residents with complex medical conditions that require interventions such as injections, feeding tubes and restraints. As such, they are oriented toward a medical care model with physicians on staff. Assisted living facilities provide less intensive care and are not oriented to a medical model of care. For example, Hallmark House utilizes the Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s care and is aspires to create more of a social environment than a clinical one.
Q.
Do you provide respite care?
A.
The Hallmark House can provide respite care depending on availability. Please contact the Hallmark House for further information.
Q.
Do you have nurses on staff?
A.
Yes. We have a Nurse Manager who oversees the care of all residents. They also work with the resident’s physician when minor illnesses need to be addressed or medication issues arise. They can also provide basic first aid. There is a nurse on call 24/7.
Q.
Do you take care of all types of dementia?
A.
Hallmark House specializes in residents that have Stage I or Stage II Alzheimer’s Disease. We carefully screen potential residents to make sure that the care we provide is the best possible fit for their needs.
Q.
Do you help residents take their prescription medication?
A.
Yes. This is an area where those with Alzheimer’s need the most assistance. Taking the medication, or taking it incorrectly can be dangerous. So we carefully supervise all residents’ medications.
Q.
Do you help residents with over-the-counter medicines?
A.
Yes. Proper use of over-the-counter medications are as important as prescription medication. However, we must have a physician’s order for all substances that we need to administer.
Q.
Can you accommodate special diets?
A.
We’re happy to modify diets to address sugar and salt intake and our resident’s food allergies. This can work hand-in-hand with our nutrition / diet that is specifically designed for residents with Alzheimer’s.
Q.
Do you provide transportation to and from appointments like the doctor or dentist?
A.
While we always prefer family members to attend appointments with a resident, we do provide transportation. In those circumstances, the cost of transportation is passed on to the family. In case of an emergency, we will contact EMS.
Q.
Do you take residents on field trips?
A.
Yes we do! While many memory care facilities shy away from such trips, we believe field trips are part of helping our residents lead as rich a life as possible.
Q.
When must a resident leave Hallmark House and go to another type of care facility?
A.
When we are no longer able to provide the level of care the resident needs. When that time comes, we work with the family to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Q.
What type of activity programs do you provide?
A.
Alzheimer’s and memory care residents need more routine and structure to their day. So our program is designed to provide that structure while offering a full, active and appropriately stimulating day. We also make sure to honor the likes and preferences of our individual residents. It is anything but a one-size fits all program.
Q.
Are residents allowed to have pets?
A.
No. However, we do offer pet therapy for residents.
Q.
Do you offer tours of your facility?
A.
Yes. But we prefer to do them by appointment. Tours can be disruptive for our residents if not handle in properly within their routines.

Q.
When can family and friends visit residents?
A.
Hallmark House has no set visiting hours. Families are welcome at any time and are strongly encouraged to be active in the resident’s life. Families can join them for meals, activities and are welcome to take them out for family time off of the property. We require that residents be signed out.
Q.
What services are not covered by rent?
A.
Services that are not required by ALL residents, such as medications, physician visits, walkers, etc. Hallmark House will provide basic cable and a phone jack in all rooms.
Q.
What kinds of behavior are your staff capable of handling?
A.
We work with individuals who display most typical behaviors associated with Alzheimer's Disease and memory care needs. Hoarding, "shopping", wandering, paranoia, hiding objects, confusion and disorientation, reluctance to bathe, difficulty dressing, layering of clothing, problems with toileting, agitation, anger, frustration, difficulty with mobility, problems with eating, withdrawal and exit seeking are all behaviors that we expect to see in our residents.
Q.
What kinds of behavior are your staff not capable of handling?
A.
Those who demonstrate verbal and physical aggression – behaviors that cause residents distress or harm to themselves or other residents – would not be best suited for Hallmark House care.
