How to Take Care of Your Skin During Winter

How to Take Care of Your Skin During Winter

You probably know it's important to take care of your skin by using a good cleanser, moisturizer and sticking to a routine. But did you know that your skin needs different treatments in different seasons? Weather can have a tremendous impact on your skin. If you're in an area where the temperature drops substantially in the winter months, the outside elements will dry out your skin. Going from the frigid cold outdoors to the heat of your home also adds to winter skin problems.

You might change some of the products you use daily, such as use a heavier moisturizer to better combat the cold. You can also include some extra steps or products to protect and replenish skin that suffers from dryness and irritability. Here are a few things you can do to protect your skin this winter.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating removes dead skin and allows the new skin to better absorb moisturizer. In the winter months, your skin may be more sensitive, so using a gentle exfoliant works best.

Moisturize

You probably already use a moisturizer, but it's important that you use the right moisturizer for the winter months. Oil-based ones work better than water-based moisturizers in the cold weather because the oil will protect your skin and keep the moisture locked in against the elements. Look for oil-based moisturizers made specifically for the face. Not all oils work well in this area, so don't mix moisturizers made for other parts of the body.

Exfoliate to help topical treatments and moisturizers work better

Apply SPF

Whether your SPF is in your moisturizer or you put it on separately, you still need it in the winter. Many women think that they only need this protection when it's hot outside and that's just not the case. The sun can damage your skin even in the cold.

Use Hand Cream

Hands and feet can take a beating in the winter. The skin is sensitive and easily dries out, gets red and cracks. If your skin on your hands or feet is dry, applying a heavy oil-based cream before bed and covering with gloves and socks will help alleviate the dryness and repair the skin.

Take a Soothing Bath

Your face isn't the only part of your body to suffer from winter skin. Many people develop dry patches on their arms or other parts of their body from the intense cold or quick changes in temperature. A bath with lukewarm water and baking soda can soothe any red irritation. Other products that pamper skin in winter can be found over the counter.

Lotion Your Body

Moisturizer should be used on the rest of your body, as well. The best time to apply lotion is directly after a shower or bath to lock in the moisture.
